From 21 September to 26 October, the Vierkante Zaal of d’Academie Beeld in Sint-Niklaas (Belgium) presents What’s Out There?, a two-part group exhibition featuring 37 painters who each push the boundaries of contemporary painting. Among them is Jeff McMillan, one of our gallery artists, whose practice foregrounds the slow collaboration between paint and time.
McMillan stretches thin layers of oil on antique linen and places them outdoors on his studio wall, exposing the surfaces to sun, rain, birds, snails, and pollution. Once “ripe,” the canvases are retrieved, bearing the traces of nature’s patient intervention.
