Dirk Zoete | Splinter Blossom: Opening Reception: Sunday 18 May, 2 - 6 pm

18 May - 29 June 2025

Kristof De Clercq is thrilled to present Splinter Blossom, a solo exhibition by Belgian artist Dirk Zoete (b. 1969).

Since 2023, Dirk Zoete has expanded his artistic repertoire to include paintings on canvas and panel, while maintaining drawing as the fundamental foundation of his practice. His most recent works feature carved wooden panels made from Oregon pine, where oil paint and lacquer meet the physicality of gouges, knives, drills, and milling tools. These pieces exist simultaneously as paintings, drawings, and sculptural wall objects.

The exhibition title Splinter Blossom reflects Zoete's process—removing splinters from raw wood—and the thematic focus on landscapes and blooming trees. This duality of hard and soft, aggression and tenderness, characterizes both his technique and subject matter.

Recurring motifs in Zoete's work include (self)portraits, landscapes, and primitive human figures constructed from geometric shapes—squares, circles, and triangles. These elements continuously evolve alongside the artist himself, changing with time, seasons, and materials.

For Zoete, being an artist is more than just expressing himself—it’s a way to learn, stay focused, and find direction in a complex world, helping him navigate everyday reality. His work is a steady process of exploration that keeps going.
