James Ensor and the mask in art; Carnival is the popular celebration of disguise and the mask; of mockery and satire, but also a source of inspiration for numerous artists. As part of the Ensor Year, the Verhaeren Museum is presenting a series of etchings by James Ensor on the theme of the mask. At the same time, they enter into a dialogue with a number of modern and contemporary artists who have given the mask a place in their work: Koen Broucke, Nikolaas Demoen, Fernand Khnopff, Tomasz Kowalski, Benjamin Monti, Peter Morrens, Félicien Rops, Jan Vercruysse, Jos Verdegem, Dirk Zoete... A number of original old carnival masks will immerse you in the atmosphere. There is also a literary part with mask poems by Charles Baudelaire, Jan Campert, Valéry Larbeau, Hugues C. Pernath, Paul van Ostaijen, Emile Verhaeren....
Exhibition from February 25 to June 2, 2024: open Thursday to Sunday, holidays (11:00-18:00), or by appointment.
