For this exhibition, the Belgian philosopher and art historian Hans Theys made a selection of 20 paintings from Joris Ghekiere’s oeuvre which provide an overview of his themes and techniques. The chosen arrangements are supplemented by three artists' cabinets devoted to rarely exhibited work by Raoul De Keyser, Walter Swennen, Luc Tuymans and Ronald Ophuis, and several young painters and sculptors.
‘Maybe Tomorrow' says the caption on a painting by Joris Ghekiere. Now tomorrow has come and we place his works next to that of his contemporaries, but also to that of emerging artists who are starting a fresh conversation with his paintings. When I was invited to assemble an exhibition around Ghekiere's work, I was delighted, because it gave me a new opportunity to get to know an oeuvre that has always been appreciated by painters and therefore deserves our attention.
