Awoiska van der Molen (Netherlands, 1972) received her MFA photography degree in 2003 and finds herself at an exciting and promising moment in her career. In the past few years her development and skills were recognized and rewarded with numerous museum group exhibitions and early 2016 with her first major museum-based solo exhibition at FOAM Amsterdam. Her first photo book Sequester (2014) has received lots of praise with many notable international reviews, a nomination for the Paris Photo /Aperture First Book Prize and won the Silver Medal in "the Most Beautiful Books of the world" competition in Leipzig.
Awoiska van der Molen's monochrome images are rigorously crafted observations of natural landscapes. Or to be more exact: the works are the result of long periods of her being in the landscape in which Awoiska van der Molen arrives deep into the essence of the remote world in which she creates her photos. For extended periods of time she moves through deserted nature to sense the landscape in a different manner, beyond its initial appearance. This gradual and solitary working process continues in the darkroom, where she prints the analogue gelatin prints by hand up to 140cm wide. Van derMolen's practice makes one aware of the essence of photography: light and darkness, presence and void. This is her palette. The care and attention to detail makes her photo works noticed because of its powerful serenity and masterful use of photography.
