Art Rotterdam 2024: Duo show with Katrin Bremermann x Mario De Brabandere

31 January - 4 February 2024

Kristof De Clercq gallery is happy to present works by gallery artists Katrin Bremermann (b. 1965, Germany) and Mario De Brabandere (b. 1963, Belgium) at Art Rotterdam 2024.

German artist Katrin Bremermann (b. 1965) combines primary abstraction with spontaneous expression to create two-dimensional paintings with a three-dimensional quality as well as three-dimensional steel sculptures. Working in the tradition of shaped canvases pioneered by artists such as Ellsworth Kelly and Kenneth Noland, Bremermann’s work explores the connection between reality and the illusion of depth and perspective. Challenging the vocabulary of painting, she depicts abstract and minimal organic shapes that explore the interplay between positive and negative space. Inspired by poetry and literature, Bremermann gives her works evocative yet ambiguous titles such as I like it there (2018) or Cooking, cleaning, sleeping (2019). She creates her lacquer drawings by waxing both sides of her paper to increase its transparency, then produces lines and marks for a marbled effect.

For over 35 years Mario De Brabandere (b. 1963, Belgium) has been steadily building up an impressive oeuvre that mainly consists of drawings, paintings, sculptures and studies on paper. In his work he investigates varieties of combinations and compositions, with geometrical shapes, perspective, volumes and motifs, in a palette of mostly bold colors. The more recent works tend to stay untitled, but the subjects are legible in all their simplicity. The drawings or paintings reprise familiar motifs and objects from cityscapes, such as vehicles or flags. His work also bears formal references to art history. De Brabandere’s practice consists of a process of spontaneous and continuous creation. According to the artist, the material itself fulfills half the work. His attention goes to the particularities of the wood and paper he works on, but also to their previous usage or history.
